the décolleté is the part of you showing time first

The V where a robe falls open is thinner skin, with less oil and less structure — and it has historically been left out of the routine entirely.

Serum applied to the neck and décolleté of a woman in warm window light

Ask a woman in her fifties where she first noticed, and she will rarely say her face. She will say her neck, or the triangle below it, usually in a photograph she did not choose or a fitting-room mirror lit from above.

There is a reason it shows there first, and it is not that the face is being better maintained — though it is.

thinner, drier, less supported

The skin of the neck and décolleté is measurably thinner than facial skin. It carries fewer sebaceous glands, so less oil arrives to keep it supple. It has less underlying fat to hold its shape. And it is in near-constant motion — every turn of the head, every conversation — across a surface with less structural support than the face has.

On top of that: sun. Decades of it, delivered to a surface that gets sunscreen far less reliably than a face does, at an angle that catches it more directly.

The face has thirty serums and a routine. The V where a robe falls open has, historically, nothing.

the fix is mostly inclusion

There is no separate category needed here, and we are suspicious of brands that invent one. What the neck needs is what the face needs — water-binding ingredients, some lipid, and protection — applied to it, which is the part that does not happen.

This is why the Age-Defying Serum is directed at the face and neck as one continuous surface rather than sold as two products. Two or three drops covers both. Whatever is left on your hands goes down onto the décolleté, and that is the whole of the technique.

direction, and the one real rule

Work upward, toward the jaw, rather than dragging down toward the sternum. This is partly about not pulling on skin that has less to hold it, and partly about making the movement deliberate enough that you do not skip it.

The rule that matters more than any of this: sunscreen goes there too. Everything else in this piece is maintenance. That one is prevention, and it is the only step in the routine that changes the trajectory rather than the appearance.
